Todmorden Town Deal Funded Plans Are Approved To Create A More Accessible, Welcoming & Energy Efficient Frontage For Community-owned Tod College!

Tod College has announced that plans for the future redevelopment and facelift to the front of the building have been given the go-ahead by Calderdale Council planning department.

The approved plans will make the entrance and appearance of the community-owned Tod College building more welcoming, attractive and accessible helping to enhance its growing role as an exciting, inclusive space for informal learning, training and community activity in Todmorden.

Approval follows consultation and a drop-in event to share ideas and gather feedback from local people and partners. The plans will include relocating the main entrance to Burnley Road to improve visibility and access, redesigning the foyer, insulating the external walls, creating a living wall to add greenery, and a light projection area, as well as creating a small extension to expand the side entrance that gives access directly to the rear of the main hall.

Julie Thorpe, Manager, Tod College Learning and Community Hub said:

“We are delighted to have our plans for transforming the front of our building given the green light.

“The Town Deal project at Tod College is all about making the building better for people who use it, more sustainable and energy efficient and to encourage more people to get involved.

“Giving the building a creative and thought-through facelift will be an important step towards this achieving this, and encouraging more people to access what we offer.”

Tod College has already carried out a series of measures through its Town Deal funding including the replacement of lighting with ‘intelligent LED’ lights which automatically switch themselves on and off, soundproofing works to the main hall that have transformed the acoustics for a wide range of uses, installation of a new sound system and accessible platform lift to the stage.

Pam Warhurst, Chair, Todmorden Town Deal Board said:

“It’s great news that plans are now approved for works to the front of the building to support the range of developments Tod College is undertaking with Town Deal investment.

“Improving access to learning and training opportunities for local people and showcasing green infrastructure in a local building is a priority for the Board, and I congratulate the Trustees and all involved in reaching this latest milestone.”

Tod College was awarded £1.7m from Todmorden’s £17.5m Town Deal investment to help secure its long-term future as an accessible and sustainable centre for learning, training and community activities in the heart of the town centre. The project is one of eight, five of them community-led, that makeup Todmorden’s Town Deal programme, led by Todmorden Town Deal Board.
