There’s MORe in Todmorden…
£17.5M more to be precise, with the news that we have finally received confirmation of £17.5M investment funding for Todmorden!
We now have until August (2022) to prepare more detailed costings and business plans for each Proposed Project.
The Story So Far…
In late 2019 Todmorden, alongside 100 other towns across the UK, was invited by the government to develop and submit proposals for a Town Deal, for up to £25M of investment, as part of the £3.6 billion Towns Fund.
As you might imagine, the money was never going to be handed to us on a plate and there were stipulations about the types of projects for which investment could be sought – and also the structure of local governance and accountability that had to be in place to be considered for receiving the funding.
One of the very first requirements was the formation of a Town Deal Board, made up of volunteers from the private, community and business sectors, who would be responsible for formulating a Town Investment Plan (TIP).
We were extremely fortunate in that we had many consultations commissioned within the town and its community over the last 15+ years which were able to form a firm foundation for our TIP.
At the same time as being invited to submit a bid for a multi-million-pound investment, the Board received £500K to realise a number of ‘quick win’ Accelerator Projects, of which most residents will have already noticed a benefit from in the town.
This website was set up to keep residents and other interested parties informed and up to date as the TIP proceeds. There’s a lot more hard work ahead to realise our vision.
Onwards and upwards, folks!

The Vision for Todmorden
Our vision is a thriving, resilient market town which capitalises on its unique landscape, its environment, and its renowned community activism and enterprising spirit.
Todmorden will have a strong visitor economy and be a beacon for social and environmental enterprise, creative industries and healthy living.
Some Key Objectives
Redevelop the heart of the town centre to create a vibrant destination which is attractive to visitors & residents alike
To improve the town centre experience and be friendly for walkers, cyclists & people with limited mobility
To refurbish and maximise the potential of our cultural & heritage assets
Build on the strength of the town’s arts, music & cultural sectors
Provide high quality opportunities in education and training as a foundation for a more prosperous & sustainable future
Grow the visitor economy to become the gateway to the Calder Valley, and to Leeds & Manchester
Continue to advocate for sustainability and contribute towards net zero carbon
As a town invited to submit a bid for investment from the Towns Fund, Todmorden was given an advanced payment of £500k to spend on smaller community projects, which could be implemented within a much quicker timescale, but still meet the Town Fund criteria.
Selected projects included; new Christmas lights (2020), a cargo bike delivery service, a new ‘wheels park’ and other improvements at Centre Vale Park, improvements at the Town Hall (inc. the restoration of the railings), the Hippodrome, Unitarian Church Lodge, plus new bike stands in the town centre.
