Project: Active Todmorden

Introduction

The project will improve walking and cycling routes in Todmorden to make the town more accessible. The changes will promote healthier communities and create a more attractive and welcoming town.

This project’s objective is to enable people to walk or cycle as part of their everyday journeys, allowing more people to access and enjoy Todmorden’s natural landscape.

This includes:

  • Creating walking and cycling routes to strengthen Todmorden’s offering as a place for outdoor activities.

  • Creating a number of new cycle parking spaces throughout Todmorden

  • Improving pedestrian access, including links between Todmorden Rail Station and the town centre

  • Creating more attractive and pleasant public spaces in the town centre

  • Upgrading the existing crossing at Centre Vale Park to create a crossing for cyclists and pedestrians to use

  • Improving signage with clearer information for residents and visitors

  • Creating safer, greener cycling and pedestrian routes in and around the town centre

  • Linking the town’s walking and cycling network to regional and national routes, such as the Rochdale Canal and Pennine Way.

Project Outline

Active Todmorden is an Active Travel project which aims to:

  • Provide an accessible, attractive, legible pedestrian environment in the town centre and on key approaches
  • Improve pedestrian access and strengthen links between the Rail Station to the town centre
  • Establish a spine walking and cycling network, using the Burnley Road corridor for connections north/south.

What It Will Achieve

Economic Growth

We’re creating opportunities for Todmorden’s local economy to grow. These changes will help to encourage new investment, attract talent, and increase footfall.

Visitor Economy

We’re making changes to increase the number of visitors to Todmorden’s art, cultural and heritage attractions.

The Great Outdoors

We’re improving access to Todmorden’s wonderful natural landscape and outdoor activities on offer.

Active Travel

We’re making walking and cycling easier and more attractive options for people.

Healthier Communities

We’re aiming to improve people’s physical and mental health and wellbeing.

Air Quality

We’re making changes to help reduce the number of car journeys and ease traffic congestion to improve air quality.

Accessibility

We’re making improvements to the town centre to support people with mobility needs and allow more people to visit and enjoy all that Todmorden has to offer.

Progress So Far

On Saturday 18th May Calderdale Council held a further Open Day at Tod Learning Centre & Community College to present some more detailed proposals following an earlier Public Meeting and Questionnaire in March. You will see the ‘Boards’ presented here below.

They have also included an Online Questionnaire for you to share your thoughts & feedback on the updated (but not yet finalised) plans –
